Flyer and leaflet printing guide: size, paper weight, artwork and distribution

Flyers and leaflets work best when the size, stock and message match how they will be handed out, posted or displayed. These are the main print decisions to make before ordering.

01

Choose a size that suits the message

A5 is one of the most popular promotional flyer sizes because it gives enough room for an offer while staying easy to hand out. A4 gives more space for detail, while DL works well for compact menus, price lists and inserts. Folded leaflets can carry more information without increasing the closed size.

  • A5: 148 × 210 mm
  • A4: 210 × 297 mm
  • DL: commonly 99 × 210 mm
  • Custom and folded formats depend on the product specification
02

Match the paper weight to the use

Lighter paper is economical for high-volume distribution, while heavier stock feels more substantial and is useful when the piece needs to survive handling for longer. Common flyer and leaflet stocks often sit between approximately 130 and 250 gsm, with heavier card used for premium handouts and postcards.

03

Keep the message easy to scan

A flyer usually has only a few seconds to communicate. Put the main offer, event, service or call to action where it is immediately visible. Avoid filling every space with text and make phone numbers, dates, addresses, QR codes and web links easy to find.

04

Prepare artwork with bleed and safe margins

Background colours and photographs should extend into the bleed area. Keep important information away from the trim edge. If the job is double sided, confirm front and back orientation before export so the finished print reads correctly after trimming or folding.

05

Think about distribution before choosing quantity

The right quantity depends on where the flyers are going: a one-day event, counter display, door drop, direct mail or repeated local promotion. Ordering significantly more than you can distribute often wastes budget, while repeated small runs can cost more per piece.

Common questions

Questions customers ask before printing

What is the most common flyer size?

A5 is a popular choice for general promotional flyers because it balances print space, handout size and cost. A4 and DL are also common depending on the content.

What gsm should I use for flyers?

Many promotional flyers use paper around 130–250 gsm. Lighter stocks suit high-volume distribution, while heavier stocks feel more premium.

Do flyers need bleed?

If colour or images run to the edge, bleed is normally required. Many professional print workflows use 3 mm bleed, but the selected product specification should be followed.

Can flyers be printed urgently in London?

Urgent production depends on quantity, stock, finishing, artwork readiness and production capacity. A standard size on a regularly stocked material is usually easier to schedule quickly.
